Tenebrae et Lux - Benjamin Bergery 2013

TENEBRAE ET LUX

Commission for Perth International Arts Festival 2013

by Benjamin Bergery
& St George's Cathedral Consort
conducted by Joseph Nolan,
with director/choreographer James Berlyn & 6 dancers
and technology by Jim Campbell

I created a series of 10 light pieces to provide a visual countepoint to the a cappela performance of music by medieval composer Carlo Gesuald about the Passion of Christ.

The Perth International Arts Festival commissioned this work to me for performances in February 2013 in Australia.

"As if dazzled by the flash bulb of an old camera, I was left with these images burned and lingering under my eyelids" -- Melissa Lesnie

"The various tableaux, redolent of the chiaroscuro of depositions, pietas and crucifixions and suchlike by Caravaggio, de la Tour, Rubens and Ribera, are as moving as they are simple" -- William Yeoman
